Restaurant Insurance in Florida: Seven Questions to Ask Before Renewal

Florida restaurant insurance deserves a fresh look when a busy business changes. A new delivery service, outdoor patio, remodel, or larger payroll can alter the risks you need to discuss. Here are seven questions Florida restaurant owners can take to their advisor before renewal.

  1. Does the policy describe every operation?
Tell your advisor about catering, delivery, food trucks, alcohol sales, live entertainment, private events, or a second location. Ask how each operation is classified and whether any exclusions or endorsements apply. A change in operations can alter the coverage needed and the underwriting information the carrier expects.
  2. What property would you need to replace after a loss?
Review kitchen equipment, refrigeration, furniture, inventory, signs, and tenant improvements. If you lease the space, check the lease for who is responsible for improvements and building components. The U.S. Small Business Administration describes commercial property insurance as protection against covered damage to business property, including events such as fire and smoke. Limits, deductibles, valuation, and exclusions still depend on the actual policy.
  3. What happens if a covered loss closes the doors?
Ask whether business income and extra expense coverage is included, which causes of loss can trigger it, how long the period of restoration may last, and whether there is a waiting period. A power outage or equipment failure should not be assumed to qualify. Ask specifically about the policy’s utility service, equipment breakdown, and food spoilage terms.
  4. How are customer injuries handled?
Discuss general liability limits, premises exposures, and any contractual insurance requirements in the lease. Slippery floors and crowded serving areas are practical concerns. OSHA identifies slips, trips, falls, burns, and cuts among restaurant hazards. Good housekeeping and training help reduce incidents, while insurance terms determine what claims are covered.
  5. Are employees and vehicles accounted for?
Review payroll, job duties, employee count, and any workers’ compensation obligations with a qualified advisor. If staff deliver food or use personal vehicles for business errands, ask about hired and non-owned auto liability and whether a commercial auto policy is needed. Do not assume a personal auto policy covers business use.
  6. What do vendors and landlords require?
Bring the lease and important contracts to the review. Compare required limits, additional insured wording, waiver requests, and certificate requirements to what the policy can actually provide. A certificate alone does not change the coverage in the policy.
  7. Which changes should be reported before renewal?
Make a short list of changes in sales, payroll, square footage, seating, cooking equipment, hours, delivery, and alcohol operations. Ask your advisor when the insurer needs to know. Keeping the application and policy aligned with the business is more useful than waiting for a surprise at claim time.
